Almost all of you who responded to yesterday’s poll said that you were going to at least one holiday event this weekend. For most respondents (57%), that was last night’s annual truck light parade.

35 more Islanders died in October from toxic drugs
For the past year-plus, Island Health has been mainly in the 30-40 range for monthly deaths. Chart: BC Coroners Service
In October, 35 more Islanders were killed by toxic drugs, per the latest BC Coroners Service report. That includes 15 in the Central Island, 12 in the South, and 8 in the North.
This brings the total this year to 379, including 89 in Victoria, 86 in Nanaimo, 31 in Cowichan Valley, 31 in Campbell River, and 21 in Comox.
This year has hit the grim 2,000-death milestone
The province added 189 in October’s report, in a drop from last Oct. but an increase from the previous month. This year has had a record-high of 45 deaths per 100,000 people in BC. Two of the five health delivery areas with the highest rates in BC this year have been the central and north Island regions.
Most BC victims are aged 30 to 59; most were men; most consumed drugs via smoking; and most were indoors. Fentanyl and its analogues remain present in 85% of victims.

Local group returns from Ukraine humanitarian trip
Bags of medical supplies donated by the team. Photo from Vancouver Island Supports Ukraine
After a long-awaited journey, the Langford humanitarian group that travelled to provide aid to Ukrainian citizens is home. This fall trip, supported by local fundraising, helped four small communities in updating equipment, facilities, and necessities.
Former Langford fire chief Bob Beckett and his team met with numerous residents and leaders, visiting five municipalities (some about Langford’s size, some smaller), two hospitals, and a number of schools.
The team delivered equipment and medical supplies to the hospitals, and Beckett said the children’s hospital was grappling with a surging percentage of babies being born prematurely due to war-induced stress. The team is looking to go on another delivery mission in the spring and to welcome four students from Ukraine to the Island.

Nanaimo messed up its approval process for borrowing $48.5M
The municipality gave locals the requisite 37 days of response time to the proposal for a new operations centre including fleet maintenance, truck washing, and servicing facilities. But it didn’t give 7 days’ notice for that 37 days, so would have to redo the process (which allows the objections of 10% of taxpayers to kill a proposal) or run a referendum. [CHEK]
