Victoria Sexual Assault Centre to get long-awaited funding boost

The provincial government has announced funding for support and additional services for survivors of sexual violence in five urban centres, including Victoria.

Starting next April, $10M will be allotted to support sexual assault centres here in the capital, as well as in Vancouver, Kamloops, Prince George, and Surrey.

“People who experience sexualized violence are able to access wrap-around, survivor-centred services, from health care, to emotional support, to police reporting options from the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre (VSAC),” said Grace Lore, minister of state for child care and the MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill.

“This funding will allow this vital organization [the VSAC] to continue to provide these services and benefit more people in our region.”

Each facility will receive $300K in annual funding which will be prorated for 2023. The VSAC offers a range of trauma-informed services, including medical exams, forensic tests and crisis support services.

105 years since BC’s worst-ever sinking happened en route to Victoria

Princess Sophia. Photo: BC Archives

In the early hours of Oct. 24, 1918, shortly after departing Alaska to return to Victoria, the Princess Sophia struck the Vanderbilt Reef.

After an initial panic, the people onboard regained some stability—heat and electricity were back, and possible rescue ships were stationed nearby.

But 40 hours later, the ship had sunk, taking with it all 353 people aboard. The howling winds and whiteout snows of a storm obscured the sight and sound of the sinking so wholly that even those on the rescue boats on stand-by didn’t see or hear any of it.

Some, though not all of the story of the ship’s final 40 hours can be pieced together from stopped watches, written letters to family, and other details.

Joni Mitchell musical returns to the Belfry

Created especially for the Belfry in 2016, this stirring musical is a tribute to one of this country’s most exceptional musical treasures.

Using only her words and music—including such iconic songs as Both Sides Now, Big Yellow Taxi, Chelsea Morning, River, and A Case of You—they weave a romantic story of heartache and love. It’s a celebration of the enduring legacy of Joni Mitchell, a testament to her influence on generations of musicians, and a tonic for our times.

Conceived by Michael Shamata and Tobin Stokes, I Think I’m Fallin’: The Songs of Joni Mitchell stars Jonathan Gould, Linda Kidder, Anton Lipovetsky, Hannah Mazurek, and Chelsea Rose.
