A handmade sign mockingly dedicating a public restroom along the Galloping Goose Trail to US President Donald Trump has been taken down.

Municipal staff were alerted to the sign on Sunday, City of Victoria spokesperson Colleen Mycroft said, and they took it down early that evening.

The wooden sign read “Donald J. Trump Memorial” and was professionally hung above the women’s and men’s restroom doorways of a washroom facility on the Gorge, near the Selkirk Trestle.

Mycroft said that because there is no CCTV footage available, it is not known who put up the sign.  

“Based on the information available to us at this time, the sign does not appear to involve any criminal offence,” VicPD said in a statement.

News of the unflattering sign lit up social media sites. 

“I don’t know who did this, but the guy deserves a beer,” said one post.

“I’m an American who finds this brilliant,” read another.

The presidential lampooning follows a series of public statements by the US president criticizing Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney, along with escalating trade tariffs between the two countries. 

On Tuesday, BC Premier David Eby announced new signs of his own—to be placed at US border crossings—that declare, "Welcome to British Columbia, Canada. Strong, proud, and will NEVER be the 51st state. Sorry!"

Earlier this summer, Metchosin artist Wendy Chartrand used a manure mixture to paint a portrait of Trump. News of “The Don of Dung” went worldwide, and the painting sold for $1,800 at the Sooke Fine Arts Show.

Just in time for fall cleaning, the CRD is expanding its Beyond the Curb program with two new locations to recycle difficult-to-collect items such as foam packaging and small electronics that aren’t accepted in curbside blue boxes.

Building on seasonal market locations and the Beyond the Curb Hub in Colwood, new year-round hubs have been secured in Oak Bay and Langford, making it easier for residents to recycle a wider range of materials. 

“The hubs provide convenient, free drop-off options for depot-only recyclables, including foam packaging, flexible plastics, household batteries, electronics, and lightbulbs,” the CRD said. 

“They also accept household paper and packaging materials, including glass bottles and jars.”

The CRD said the program is designed to ensure as many residents as possible can access convenient drop-off locations for a wide range of recyclable materials while shortening the drive to get there.

Hubs are located near recreation centres, transit exchanges, and cycling infrastructure to improve access. All three locations will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 4pm.

Victoria City Council to formally oppose West Coast Oil Pipeline
While federal and provincial governments support the proposed 1,250-km pipeline as a necessary economic project of national interest, Victoria’s city council says it objects. Spearheaded by Coun. Susan Kim, the council has agreed to write a formal submission to the federal government opposing the pipeline’s construction on environmental grounds. Councillors Chris Coleman and Marg Gardiner voted against the motion, saying it could provoke Alberta as it prepares for a referendum on staying within Confederation. Conservative North Island MP Aaron Gunn says the council should stay in its lane. [CHEK]

Heated Rivalry spawns 2 UVic classes this fall
The gay-romance hockey series that has caught fire across the globe will be explored in two classes: in English and law. Prof. Gillian Calder will teach a course called “Queering Law” using the Crave show to examine how law regulates the lives of queer Canadians. English professor Janice Niemann will offer a new course examining the works of Heated Rivalry author Rachel Reid to study how novels are adapted to film. She said the university had to add more seats to satisfy demand. [Times Colonist]

Series of car break-ins in View Royal: RCMP has 2 suspects
Thefts from vehicles occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend on De Goutiere Place, Chilco and Kaleigh Lane. Westshore RCMP have identified two male suspects and urge anyone with information on the burglaries to contact them at 250-474-2264 or Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Police also remind the public to remove all valuables from their vehicles, including electronics, wallets, and bags; to park in well-lit areas; and to lock their vehicle doors. [RCMP]
