Local singer’s home targeted by gunfire & arson

Left: Local artist AP Dhillon, confirming his safety, sings over Instagram on Monday. Right: Unverified video appears to show POV of attack on his Colwood home and vehicles

AP Dhillon, a Camosun student turned internationally popular Punjabi singer and rapper, is unharmed after an apparent attack on his house in Colwood. West Shore RCMP said that after calls at 1:15am on Monday, officers found multiple shots fired at a home on Ravenwood and two burning vehicles which Colwood Fire quickly put out.

A “targeted event,” RCMP say

RCMP now seek drivers’ dashcam footage from nearby Veterans Memorial Parkway between 12 and 1:30am. India Today reported on Monday that Dhillon's homes in Woodbridge, Ontario and on “Victoria Island” were shot at and republished an online video that appears to show the attack from the shooter's POV. The video is unverified, but matches local witness descriptions and aftermath photos.

Neighbours told the Vancouver Sun that security cameras showed a black SUV driving on Ravenwood Road before shots were heard around 1am. Diane Reed said that she saw the remnants of two burning vehicles, and that the only person home had been Shinda Kahlon (a musician Dhillon often works with).

Dhillon, 31, posted on Instagram on Labour Day afternoon, saying “I'm safe. My people are safe,” thanking people who reached out to him, and wishing “Peace and love to all.”

Association with famous actor cited as reason

Several reports indicate that a gang has targeted Dhillon over his association with Salman Khan, one of the biggest actors in the world, who starred in Dhillon's latest music video. Recent attacks against Khan, and people around him, relate to a multi-decade poaching case.

Parksville swimmer wins Canada’s first Paris Paralympic gold; Victorian wins second

Cody Fournie of Victoria won Canada's second gold medal of these Games in the early hours of Tuesday. The wheelchair racer broke his own Canadian record, finishing the T51 200-m in 37.64 seconds.

Fournie, 35, was previously a wheelchair rugby player, but switched over to racing after missing the cut for Tokyo 2020. The World Championships silver medalist now has gold in his first Paralympics.

Nicholas Bennett captured Canada's first Paris gold

Bennett, 20, won Monday’s 100M Breaststroke SB14 with a time of 1:03:98. (For context, the best 100m breaststroke time by Michael Phelps is 1:02:67). His latest medal is Canada's 11th overall in Paris and its 400th in history, per Swimming Canada.

Bennett took a silver earlier in the weekend with a personal-best time in the 200m freestyle. He won gold in that event at last year's world championships, but this time his opponent set a world record.

Bennett, who is autistic, competes in the S14 / SB14 impairment category, which covers a range of what the Paralympics categorize as intellectual impairments. He is coached by a fellow Islander: his sister.

Islanders well represented in Paris

Bennett isn't the only young man from the East Island to dominate in Paris: Nanaimo's Ethan Katzberg won his Olympic hammer throw event by the largest margin seen in more than a century.

Parksville is also represented by Trevor Hirschfield, 40, in his fifth Olympics. He plays for the Wheelchair Rugby team alongside Byron Green of Comox. Other Islanders competing include Pender's Katy Dandenau (wheelchair basketball) and Victoria's Melissa Pemble (cycling) and Nate Reich (athletics).
