A shout-out to reader Karen, who felt differently than I did about this summer’s weather: Karen wrote in to lament how little rain we got and how the drought led to so many wildfires. She rightfully pointed out the dying trees, particularly cedars, all over the city because of the dry weather.
While I was showing gratitude for the seemingly endless sunshine, Karen was celebrating the rain.
“Please encourage your readers to rejoice in the rain,” she wrote.
Fair point, Karen. I can definitely get behind that.

Police and peace officers march today in BC Law Enforcement Memorial Parade

The courage and dedication of Canada’s police and peace officers will be honoured today as law enforcement members march for their brothers and sisters who died in the line of duty.
Approximately 450 police officers, peace officers and other uniformed law enforcement personnel will parade from the Empress Hotel to their provincial monument in the BC Emergency Services Garden of Honour behind the BC Legislature.
The British Columbia Law Enforcement Memorial Service coincides with the 49th Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
Both take place each year on the last Sunday in September.
Victoria’s march will begin at approximately 12:40pm on Government and head to the legislature and the BC Law Enforcement Memorial. The large, grey granite monument, known as The Bastion, has four engraved panels, each representing a unique aspect of policing history.
It honours the sacrifice of fallen law enforcement and peace officers. The term “peace officers” includes fisheries, customs and conservation officers, sheriffs and federal and provincial corrections workers.
VicPD says commuters should expect delays getting in and out of James Bay today, with road closures beginning at 10:30am on Government near the Empress and rolling closures beginning at 12:20pm elsewhere on the route.
Streets will reopen once the parade clears, subject to the discretion of the police, the city said. The memorial service is expected to begin at 1pm and conclude at 2:30pm.
Another heads-up from police: There will be drones in the air, and CCTV cameras will be deployed.
