Affordable seniors home in James Bay turns to the public for help to stay open

The Glenshiel, home to 64 low- and moderate-income seniors, is in "dire need of help," according to its operators, the Glenshiel Housing Society (GHS).

The society needs to raise significant funds—at least $200K, it told CTV—or the seniors' residence near Beacon Hill Park could close within a year. The Glenshiel doesn’t receive ongoing operational funding from the province. BC Housing supports building maintenance, but the nonprofit relies mainly on residents' rent and public donations.

The Glenshiel provides a unique living model for its residents—rent covers a multitude of services, including meals, housekeeping, wifi, and a staffed front desk open 24 hours a day—and GHS says it's one of the “very few affordable options” for seniors looking to maintain their independence.

But the financial reality of maintaining this model “has become increasingly difficult and very nearly impossible,” GHS said in a statement.

"The cost of food has risen dramatically. Staffing costs continue to increase. Utilities, insurance, maintenance, supplies, and virtually every service required to operate a residential building have become more expensive," GHS said.

“At the same time, we are committed to keeping rents affordable for the seniors who call The Glenshiel home.”

GHS's goal is to raise an initial $20K to address immediate concerns—it launched a GoFundMe this week, and it is taking donations through CanadaHelps.

The Glenshiel has a storied history in downtown Victoria

It's housed in an Edwardian building, constructed in 1909, that operated as the Criterion Hotel and later the Glenshiel Inn. Built close to where the Royal BC Museum (RBCM) now stands, The Glenshiel building became provincial property in 1972 as part of the museum grounds. In 1997, GHS took over operations of the building, which is still owned by the RBCM.
