Local teens to compete in roller derby Down Under

Two Victoria-area teens have been selected to represent Canada at the Junior Roller Derby World Cup in Brisbane, Australia.

Sidney’s Chloe Crotty—known by the derby name Tuffy—and Langford’s Teaghan Dillon—known as Kitty Catapult—will don the red and white jersey and maple leaf Down Under in July.

“I’ve had the pleasure of watching these two athletes grow up and into the game since they were 11,” says Cindy MacDougall, who’s been on the local roller derby scene for years as a self-described “derby parent.”

“They are exceptional competitors, especially when working together, and I pity the teams facing them at the Cup in 2025.”

Crotty, 17, and Dillon, 18, impressed in tryouts in Lethbridge last spring and in Waterloo, Ont., in the summer. They skated and bashed with 80 others competing for 30 spots for the second tryout round held later in Vancouver. Over a two-day period which included on- and off-skate drills and endurance training, the squad was reduced to a roster of 20 skaters, said Kiana McKinstry—Kamikaze K in the derby world—who coaches the Rotten Apples—the junior team of Victoria’s Eves of Destruction Roller Derby League, where both Crotty and Dillon have played since they were 11.

Both served as captains and were members of BC’s provincial team, West Coast Spirit, last season—Crotty was co-captain.

Team Canada’s training camps will be held in February and again in May, with locations TBA in advance of the World Cup where Canada is sending an “open” team—all genders—to compete against teams from Australia, the US, France, New Zealand, and Great Britain.

Captained by Victoria’s Naomi Morrell—MacDougall’s daughter—Canada won a bronze medal at the 2023 World Cup in France.

Roller derby athletes pay their own freight—including gear, food, transportation, and lodging.

You can support Crotty and Dillon through their GoFundMe page.

The owner is hoping neighbours will have doorbell camera or dash cam footage that might shed light on who stole the skeleton. [Times Colonist]

BC Ports shutdown could prove Grinchy at Christmas
Thousands of containers of goods destined for retail stores may not make it in time for the holiday shopping season due to a labour impasse. The BC Maritime Employers Association locked out about 700 foremen from ILWU Local 514 on Monday afternoon in response to a strike notice issued by the union. Those containers are now sitting stationary at BC ports or on cargo ships that are being diverted to other ports. [CTV]
