5 mezcal cocktails to try in Victoria

If tequila is your liquor of choice, you may be interested in its richer, smokier cousin: mezcal. The spirit is a traditional Mexican distilled spirit made from the agave plant—as is tequila—with producers mainly in Oaxaca.

It has a distinctive bold, earthy, and smoky flavour, which comes from roasting the agave hearts in underground pits before fermentation. The spirit has been growing in popularity in Canada in recent years and has carved out a niche among spirits enthusiasts, bartenders, and those seeking unique craft beverages.

Its signature smoky flavour adds depth and complexity to drinks, appealing to adventurous palates. Check out these Victoria bars to escape the fall rain and warm up with a tasty mezcal cocktail.

Comic Con Comic Gone from Greater Victoria
Capital City Comic Con was a huge success in its brief three-year, pandemic-interrupted stay. A joint venture of Destination Greater Victoria, the Downtown Victoria Business Association, and Cherry Bombs Toys, the cosplay convention last convened in 2022 before taking last year off. One of the organizers says they just didn’t have the many resources needed to put on the show again. [CHEK]

Bike lane plans leave parking in dust say Esquimalt businesses
Some merchants say they oppose the proposed east-west protected bike lanes because they will take away street-side parking on Esquimalt between Lampson and Canteen. Even the owner of a bike shop in the middle of that stretch says parking has to come first. The group has proposed the bike lanes be built to loop below the main artery Esquimalt, and run past Bullen Park and the Archie Browning Sports Centre instead. See resident survey in the Bulletins section. [Times Colonist]

Students wait on extreme-weather protocol change at UVic
The university was criticized last Jan. after a student was struck by a car on Ring Road during a snowstorm on a day some felt was dangerous enough to close the campus. A student petition followed, calling for virtual classes on days of extreme weather. Students say they're still waiting for UVic to change its strategy from “when in doubt, keep the university open” to “when in doubt, close the university.” [Martlet]
