New $4.5-million Topaz Park pickleball plaza

Victoria pickleball players now have twice as many outdoor courts to play on in Victoria, with the opening of what the city is calling the largest pickleball hub on the Island.

Eleven permanent and pickleball-specific courts—eight for online booking and three for drop-in—were bustling with action in their inaugural weekend at Topaz Park, off Blanshard near Mayfair Shopping Centre.

The hub officially opened on Friday and immediately became the city’s outdoor pickleball hotbed. “We’re tremendously excited to see this facility open,” said Roger Graves, president of the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association (VRPA).

“It’s a fantastic addition for our growing community of players.”

The city has 10 other pickleball courts—at Beacon Hill Park and Central, Oaklands, and Barnard parks.
The new courts feature permanent nets, fencing, and lighting for nighttime play—and for those hot days, even a structure to hide in the shade.

New features include improved pathways, a new outdoor fitness area, a gathering space with bike racks, seating, and a misting station.

The courts and upgrades complement the earlier addition of new turf fields and skate and bike parks—part of the city’s 10-year Topaz Park redevelopment. A fenced dog park is next and is expected to be ready later this year.

The pickleball project cost $4.5 million to build, so, understandably, there is a $10 per-hour, per-court fee for adults and $5 for kids for the eight reserved courts. Drop-in play is free on the other three.
