Haze drifts in. Silly Boat Regatta results. Photos of owls. This week's events.
Good morning !
On Saturday I went over to the Paint-in and Art Walk, which was an incredible chance to not only see current work from 100+ of the region's artists, but also to meet them and talk about those works (although I didn't talk to 100+ of them).
With an estimated 40k people out there in the hot mid-July sun, I figure there must have been some Capital Daily readers. If you were one if them, let us know what you enjoyed there!
Today's main stories also cover both artistry and heat.

Emmy nomination for series about Saanich murder
Under the Bridge, the Hulu miniseries that dramatizes the 1997 killing of teenager Reena Virk by her peers near the Craigflower Bridge, has secured a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Lily Gladstone, fresh off of multiple award wins and an Oscar nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon, is being recognized for her portrayal of a local police officer investigating the case.
The series, adapted from a book, has sparked discussions, both locally and more widely, about the ethics of True Crime as a genre. However, the series has at times been praised as handling these issues more thoughtfully than others in the genre.
Nomination makes history
Along with Kali Reis, for True Detective: Night Country, Gladstone is the first Indigenous nominee for Best Supporting Actress. Early this year, a Nuu-chah-nulth actor and Alberni-area drama teacher spoke about how Gladstone's breakout success has been inspiring Island Indigenous actors and youth.
Plenty of Island connections in recent Emmy years
Last winter, the Island-shot nature documentary series Island of the Sea Wolves won 4 Emmys including one for Comox-based cinematographer Maxwell Hohn.
At the 2022 Emmys, Maid—one of the biggest productions filmed on the Island—was nominated for 3 awards including writing, directing, and lead actress (Margaret Qualley). Netflix’s Maid, filmed at 185 locations around the Island, depicted a young woman fleeing domestic violence, and donated truckloads of homewares from the production to people in similar situations.
The Last of Us, a multi-Emmy winner in 2023, has been filming parts of its second season on the Island and shut down part of downtown Nanaimo.

Haze appears as BC & Washington fires continue
Greater Victoria saw some of its first smog of the season yesterday, while other parts of the Island saw the first rain this month. That dropped a portion of the mid-Island to “Moderate” fire risk but Greater Victoria (like many parts of BC) remains in extreme. Weekend heat alerts for the East Island are now over.
The recent rain wasn't enough to really dampen Island fire risk, fire information officer Sam Bullion told CHEK. But the light current smoke is wafting up from Stateside, he said.
More evacuations on mainland as BC battles 300+ wildfires
Heat records fell in the Interior this weekend and fires spurred evacuations there and in Northern BC. The wildfire service says lightning sparked 87% of current fires. [CP]
Island company adds new firefighting contracts
The Alberni-area Coulson Aviation will now provide a heavy lift helicopter for the next two months in BC, and signed on to continue its large anti-fire operation in Australia for 10 years. It will soon retire its Martin Mars bombers, which were 20th-century firefighting staples in BC. [CHEK]
The lives of smokejumpers
Last week, a new feature story looked into the work of firefighters who drop out of planes, parachuting in to fight some of BC's biggest and most remote fires.

SOLID says opponents of North Park homelessness hub are spreading misinfo
Some residents have protested and started a petition, saying they fear the area will become like Pandora due to clients of the Dowler Place facility (which offers meals, medical help, and referrals).
