The lives and legacies of Island fathers

This Father's Day, we're bringing you a roundup of some of our stories that cover the lives of dads and granddads on the Island. In these, we've looked at the things local dads have done for their kids, from charting the path of a daughter's long-lost doll to campaigning to make a son's invented word famous.
We've looked at the legacies fathers have passed on, from love of the Maple Leafs or sailing boats to the knowledge of how to speak and preserve a traditional language that could have been lost. And we've also looked at how those who have lost influential fathers have carried on, and carried their fathers' values and abilities forward.

How to not freak out when you’re expecting: Local dad pens guide to fatherhood and mental health
From an early age, Graham Meckling always wanted to be a dad.
But when the local restaurateur’s wife became pregnant, he realized he didn’t have any real idea what having a baby would entail. Yes, there would be playing catch and reading stories down the line, but having and caring for a baby was something different. There were pre-parenthood guides out there, but he didn’t connect with their focus on the medical details.
He’d never become a doctor in a few months, he figured, and he had real doctors he could talk to. What he says he needed, and what he believes new dads in general are lacking, is a guide to managing one’s own mental health, relationship, and perspective.
It’s those things that are a focus of his new book on fatherhood, Babies Don’t Talk. Last month he sat down with Capital Daily and Tasting Victoria to talk about the book, the state of modern fatherhood, and the parallels he’s seen between parenthood and the restaurant and bar industry.

A car on three wheels caused a fire… then two days later, it happened again
📸 Saanich Police
Over the course of half-hour on Monday, a car missing a front wheel made it from Admirals in View Royal over to West Saanich Road and Quadra, sparking a grass fire and multiple calls to police on the way. Saanich Police said the driver was arrested on Glanford around 1pm, and blew double the legal limit on a breath test.
Then on Wednesday evening, an erratic driver hit a curb on Cook near Quadra, then continued on to Douglas before the minivan lost a wheel and caught fire. The driver caught a 90-day prohibition, and police are investigating for drug impairment.
