Dazzling Saanich Christmas lights help to feed
many neighbours

There are several highly engaging Christmas light displays in the region, and many of them act as beacons of joy this time of the year, including one in the Shelbourne neighbourhood of Saanich that goes the distance for its neighbours.
The Cedar Avenue Christmas Display, at 1665 Cedar, draws a lot of eyeballs each year, and for the past three years, it’s also attracted hope and help for area families who are food insecure.
Each year, the Davies family decorates their house to the nines and welcomes Christmas revellers to admire the lights—and to bring non-perishable food for the nearby Shelbourne Community Kitchen on Cedar Hill.
The kitchen used to operate out of a small three-bedroom bungalow just around the corner from the Davies’ home, so this is all about neighbours helping neighbours.
Last year, the month-long display helped raise $4,320 and hundreds of pounds of donated food, directly supporting local families in need.
“The dedication, generosity, and community spirit behind this event are so inspiring,” said Kim Cummins, the kitchen’s executive director.
“It shows how small acts powered by volunteers and caring families can create a big impact during the holidays.”
The Shelbourne Community Kitchen Society has been providing healthy food and helping families for 12 years—and from May to September, it produces vegetables out of its two gardens.
It offers a pantry program that distributes healthy foods, a selection of cooking and food skills programs, and a resource centre.
The kitchen’s compassionate volunteers help to support 1,900+ adults and 800+ children in need of food from time to time.
As we approach Christmas, it is that time—so, enjoy the lights and perhaps consider donating some food items, or if you can spare it, some cash.
