SD61 superintendent, senior staff on leave as board probes possible financial benefits

The Greater Victoria School District’s board alleges that one or more people opposed to its position on police liaison officers may have received “financial benefits."
On May 25—more than a year after firing them—the province reinstated trustees who disagreed with SD61’s school police liaison officer (SPLO) program.
In a statement released Friday, the board said SD61’s superintendent, “as well as other members of our senior leadership team, have gone on leave.”
The board said it “cannot discuss the details of their leave.”
The board said it has learned that key board policies, reporting directives, and procedures on fiscal responsibility, accountability, and student safety “were rescinded or altered in our absence, with no rationale provided” to it.
“Furthermore, we are concerned about the possibility of financial benefits being provided to one or more individuals who opposed the Board’s stance on School Police Liaison Officers, as well as transactions occurring outside normal operating processes.”
The board’s leave has not impacted—and will not impact—the return to school for teachers, staff, students, and parents.
“We have very capable designates in place, and the Board will be stepping up to assist where appropriate and necessary, and the return to school will be as smooth as usual.”
