Good morning {{First name}}!

Canada is in for some more economic headaches courtesy of the US. Trade negotiations that appeared to be on track broke down at the eleventh hour Friday night, in what Prime Minister Mark Carney called a war-like "attack."

The US's 50% tariffs on select Canadian goods—including cement and hockey sticks—are now in effect; our retaliatory tariffs on our southern neighbour will go into effect Sept. 8.

I don't know about you, but I'm not particularly interested in buying US-made goods at the moment. If you're feeling the same, check out our roundup of Island-based brands to shop instead.

Fundraiser launched for family of
Goldstream drowning victim

A fundraiser has been launched to support the family of Deepender Singh, who drowned Monday evening while swimming in Goldstream Provincial Park.

The GoFundMe was launched this week by Deepender's younger brother, Pushpinder Singh, to support his family during an "extremely difficult time."

The 27-year-old had been swimming near Goldstream Falls when he "went under the water and did not resurface," said West Shore RCMP in a statement.

Police say bystanders pulled him out of the water and immediately began life-saving measures that continued until emergency services arrived, and he was transported to hospital.

"Despite the collective efforts of bystanders and emergency personnel, the man later succumbed to his injuries," said the RCMP.

Pushpinder said he launched the fundraiser this week to help his family cover the "unexpected expenses associated with his passing, including funeral and memorial arrangements and other related costs."

Once these costs are covered, Pushpinder said, any additional funds will go directly to his parents to "help support them during this incredibly difficult time."

"No family is ever prepared to lose someone so young and so suddenly," said Pushpinder.

"His passing was sudden and completely unexpected, leaving our family, friends, and everyone who knew him devastated."

As of yesterday, the GoFundMe had reached its goal of $15K.
