Royal Roads University returns to its military roots

The university has announced it will team with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to offer officer training beginning this fall. As part of “a new subsidized education pathway,” 40 cadets will train and live on campus.

“Students can expect to benefit from flexible credential laddering, applied learning pathways, and a focus on real-world problem solving,” said Philip Steenkamp, Royal Roads’ president and vice-chancellor.

Cadets will be able to pursue bachelor’s degrees in business administration, professional communication, environmental science, and justice studies. CAF personnel will be on-campus to train them in leadership and ethics, fitness, health and well-being, and second-official language training, the university said.

“This initiative expands our ability to educate and develop future leaders by combining academic excellence with structured military development,” Maj.-Gen. Jeannot Boucher, Commander of the Canadian Defence Academy, said in a statement.

Royal Roads was used as a naval training ground in the 1940s and later expanded to also train officers for the Army and the Air Force.

It became Royal Roads Military College (RRMC) in 1967 and closed in 1995, before the BC government bought it and turned it into a university.
